Magazines
There are not very many adoption magazines available, if you exclude those published by individual adoption agencies for their clients. The following are what is available from the UK and USA.
Adoptalk
The quarterly newsletter of the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC). Content is similar to Adoption & Fostering: the emphasis is on more on professional issues (legislation, model adoption programmes, social work) as well as the first-person accounts which form the bulk of Adoption Today. Only available with membership of NACAC (personal membership US$40.00 per year). There is an associated web site Write to: North American Council on Adoptable Children970 Raymond AvenueSuite 106St. Paul, Minnesota 55114-1149USA
Adopted Child
Editor: Lois Melina. A commercial, American newsletter, but much of it is very relevant to British circumstances. The editor/author is an experienced adopter. Write to: Adopted ChildP.O. Box 9362Moscow, Idaho 83843USA
Adoption & Fostering
A quarterly publication of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering. Intended for professional social workers, but useful for parents, too.
Adoption Today
The magazine of Adoption UK, published six times a year. Includes adoption experiences of real people, articles about problems and special needs, book reviews, a diary of forthcoming meetings and events, and a digest of adoption articles in the professional and lay press. Its supplement, Children Who Wait, contains profiles of special-needs children looking for new families.
Adoptive Families
I have not seen a copy of this and cannot recommend it from personal knowledge, but its web site includes endorsements from reputable figures in adoption. An American title, so some of the content will not be relevant for British adopters. Formerly published by Adoptive Families of America, it is now an independent commercial publication. Content is similar to Adoption Today and Adopted Child. Published every two months. There is an associated web siteWrite to: New Hope Communications LLC2472 BroadwayNew York, New York 10024USA
Be My Parent
This British Association for Adoption and Fostering publication gives profiles of children waiting for new families.
Community Care
This is a general British social work weekly magazine, widely available at local newsagents. It almost always carries articles to do with fostering and adoption and also advertisements from companies and local authorities looking for paid or voluntary workers in fostering and adoption, including professional foster carers. The news-stand price is £1.55; a personal yearly subscription is £72.00, including postage. There is an associated web site
