This is not intended to be an authoritative handbook on British adoption law or practice. It is intended as a guide to help people who are thinking about adoption as a way of starting or increasing their families, and to give them a general idea of what to expect during and after assessment and placement. While I’ve made every effort to be sure that this book is factually correct, changes in adoption law, regulations and practice are frequent, and some may have escaped my notice. I cannot accept legal liability for the factual content. If you need official and legally authoritative information about any aspect of adoption law or practice, you should consult a solicitor specializing in adoption law or the British Association for Adoption and Fostering.

Also, this book is intended for UK residents (both UK citizens and foreigners living in the UK) who want to adopt a child who lives in the UK. There is a section for UK residents wanting to adopt from abroad and UK citizens living abroad will also information useful for them. But if you are British or a foreign citizen living outside the UK, you are extremely unlikely to be able to adopt a child from the UK, unless you are already related to her.
